Activity Centres in our Child Care Programs

Block Area
The block area enhances physical development of small and large muscles. When children build with blocks
they learn:
- the concepts of size, shape, numbers, length, height and weight
- classification and sorting of objects by size, shape and function
- predicting cause-and-effect relationships
- organization in a sequence
- use of addition and subtraction
Dramatic Area
The dramatic play area encourages children to act out roles and learn about self, family and society.
When children play in the dramatic area they:
- co-operate through taking on roles and playing out scenes
- act out fears and anxieties
- identify and plan play
- demonstrate an understanding of social expectations.
Table and Floor Toys
Table toys and floor toys include puzzles, various blocks and other construction materials. When children
play with table toys and floor toys they:
- sort and classify things according to their own categories
- judge distance, direction, right and left, up and down
- demonstrate an understanding of number concepts related to sequencing and classification.
Creative Art
The creative art area encourages
creativity
and freedom of expression. When children play in the
creative area they:
- assert their individuality
- develop find motor skills and sensory awareness
- improve eye/hand co-ordination
Sensory Area
The sensory area encourages and understanding of cause-and-effect relationships. When children
use the sensory area they:
- understand cause-and-effect relationships
- develop problem-solving skills
- develop senses of sight, sound, smell and touch
- see a task through to completion.
Story Time and Library
The sensory area encourage children to gain information and adjust to new experiences. When
children use the library area they:
- aquire specific knowledge
- familiarize themselves with various genres of literature
- increase their vocabulary
- recognize objects, colours and shapes
- understand sequences
- develop storytelling abilities
Science/Interest Area
The science area encourages children to be independent and self-reliant. When children use the science area they learn to:
- Wonder and develop their inquisitive minds
- develop problem-solving skills
- understand cause-and-effect relationships
- reproduce or act out interpretations and/or solutions to situations.
Music and Movement
The music area encourages children to participate in cooperative games. When children participate in music they:
- explore musical experiences
- enhance small and large muscle development
- improve balance and co-ordination
- refine listening skills to notice changes in tempo or pitch
- promote positive self-esteem
Cooking Activities
Cooking activities encourage children to learn about nutrition and develop a love for food.
When children participate in a cooking activity they:
- develop self-help skills
- gain a foundation for math concepts such as sequencing and measurement
- develop independence
- learn to follow directions
Outdoor Play
Outdoor play encourages children to explore learning experiences unique to outdoor environments. When Children play outdoors they:
- notice changes in nature
- develop their large muscles
- use their bodies in skillful ways
- become good observers
